Gelert

FSCN1458

Gelert was Prince Llewellyn’s faithful hound. One day, Llewellyn went out hunting, leaving Gelert to guard his baby son. On returning, he was horrified to find his baby missing and blood all over Gelert’s jaws. He drew his sword and stabbed Gelert through the heart. As the hound lay dying, Llewellyn heard his baby cry and found him hidden under blankets beside the dead body of a great wolf. Llewellyn rushed to Gelert’s side, full of remorse, but it was too late. Llewellyn never smiled again.

  1. I know this story. Thanks so much for reminding me of it. It’s a heartbreaking story about trust, friendship and loyalty. Of course the hound would protect his family. Being a person who can trust others has such immense value. x

    • It’s so sad, isn’t it? We want to go back later in the week and leave a dog biscuit for Gelert!

      • That’s lovely of you. I’ll send some prayers for him in dog heaven. He’s a saint.
